As an active ingredient, peppermint essential oil has a natural cooling sensation that soothes itchy skin and calms the urge to scratch. (1) Studies suggest it can also protect against mosquitoes, mites, and other pests. (2) It’s often used as a plant-based alternative to commercial bug repellents and eliminates exposure to harsh toxins like DEET.

Added shea butter allows your skin to absorb the peppermint oil and serves as a creamy moisturizer. With bonus anti-inflammatory benefits, it helps heal irritated skin caused by rough scratching. (3) Use it to reduce redness and swelling from inflamed areas.
Beeswax helps solidify this balm to keep it from melting at warmer temperatures. It’s an all-natural product that comes directly from bee hives and is often used to make lip balms, deodorants, and homemade sunscreen. Look for it at your local health shop or online for an inexpensive way to create other natural skincare products.
To get started, melt the beeswax pellets and shea butter over medium heat using a double boiler. Once melted, stir in drops of peppermint oil and pour the mixture into a small measuring cup with a spout. Carefully fill three balm tubes with melted mixture and place in the refrigerator, or a dry cool spot, for one hour. When ready to use, apply the balm on the affected area and reapply as needed. Store in your purse or pocket whenever venturing outdoors for easy access.
Note: Always test on a small patch of skin before using and avoid standing in direct sunlight for long periods of time.
