Replace your toxic dryer sheets with these DIY wool dryer balls to naturally soften your clothes.
Looking for a safe and effective way to soften laundry without using toxic dryer sheets? Try making these easy wool dryer balls to reduce static, dewrinkle clothes and speed up the drying process. Simply toss them into the dryer with a load of laundry and let them do their thing!
Start with two skeins of 100% wool yarn to make four dryer balls. Wrap the wool around your index and middle finger 10-15 times. Remove your fingers, then wrap the yarn in the opposite direction. Repeat around the middle. Continue wrapping the yarn in all directions until it’s slightly larger than a tennis ball. Grab a crochet needle and weave the remaining yarn through a few strands to help secure it, then use the tip of the needle to push the end of your yarn into the center of the ball to hide the loose end. Repeat with the remaining yarn.

Next, place each wool ball into a single nylon sock or pantyhose, and tie a knot to secure. Add them to a load of towels in hot water, then add to the dryer together. You may need to wash and dry 2-3 cycles to get the balls to completely felt since this will prevent it from unraveling.
Remove the wool balls from the nylons. Now they’re ready to be added to your next cycle in place of dryer sheets! Use at least 2 balls per load to help fluff and circulate clothes.

- Crochet needle
- Nylon socks or pantyhose
Instructions
- Wrap the yarn around your index and middle finger 10-15 times.
- Remove your fingers and wrap the yarn in the opposite direction around the middle another 10-15 times.
- Continue to wrap the yarn in all directions to create an even ball shape.
- Once your wool ball is slightly larger than a tennis ball, use the crochet needle and weave the remaining yarn through a few strands to help secure it. Then, use the tip of the needle to push the end of your yarn into the center of the ball to hide it.
- Repeat with the remaining wool to create four dryer balls.
- Place the wool balls into a nylon sock or pantyhose and make a knot to tie it closed.
- Wash the dryer balls with a load of towels on the hot setting. Then dry as usual. Repeat this cycle if the balls seem loose until they are completely felted.
- Remove the dryer balls from the nylons.
- Add at least two dryer balls to your next drying cycle in place of dryer sheets.
Tips:
- Be sure to purchase 100% wool skeins of yarn that are not intended for washing. You’ll need the yarn to felt so that it prevents the ball from unraveling.
- Do not use colored yarn as the pigment can dye laundry.
